MetróFolk @ Mehanata in Manhattan, May 8th 2008, 8-10.30 PM

May 2nd, 2008

Next Week, Thursday May 8th we are taking Mehanata, NY's prime gypsy-punk bar by storm. We'll put the gypsy in where the punk is missing.

The band will be playing from 8-10.30 PM, and there will be much dancing, so come and stomp it out while drinking a variety of Bulgarian and Russian beers and other good stuff.

Mehanata is located at 113 Ludlow Street in Manhattan between Delancey and Rivington.

The Closest subway stop is the Essex-Delancey stop of the F,J,M,Z trains. The Grand Street stop of the B,D is close too, and it's not much of a walk from the 2nd ave stop of the V.

The line-up will be:

Jake Shulman-Ment - violin

Aron Szekely - viola

Laszlo Hajdu-Nemeth - viola

Raul Rothblatt - bass

Kata Harsaczki - vocals

Band donation is $10, or $8 for students (we know the hard life of the scholar...).

NYC's finest dancers will guarantee an unforgettable evening Hungarian and Transylvanian gypsy music!

MetróFolk at the good Coffeehouse, may 2nd, 2008 , 8PM

May 2nd, 2008

Here's a reminder about today's gig:

Our next gig is happening this
Friday, May 2nd in Brooklyn at the Brooklyn Society for Ethical Culture. The
event is part of their regular series, the Good Coffeehouse Music
Parlor:
http://www.bsec.org/events/coffeehouse

The BSEC is located at

The best way to get there is either to take the B,Q to seventh avenue
and walk down flatbush towards prospect park. Another option if the F
train to Seventh Avenue (and ninth street). Third (and in my humble
opinion best) option is to take the 2,3 to Grand Army Plaza.

$10 for adults, $6 for kids

The line-up will be:
Jake Shulman-Ment - violin
Aron Szekely - viola

Videos from the April 26th Tanchaz

May 2nd, 2008

The Tanchaz was a lot of fun, especially with our numerous guests from Washington DC and the gypsy violinist they brough over, Alexandru Ciurcui from Mezoszopor. Soon there will be info about our mini tour in June with said violinist.

Here are some video links, the first two taken by our good friend, Lily Erdy:

ENJOY!

Tanchaz - Hungarian Folk Dance party on Apri 26, 2008 - 7.30 PM @ the Hungarian House in Manhattan

April 25th, 2008

Dear Friends,

Yet another Hungarian folk event is happening in only five days! A
Hungarian Dance Party (Táncház) with dance instruction and live music
by the MetróFolk band.

April 26, 2008, Saturday at 7.30 PM

The lineup is as usual:
Jake Shulman-Ment - violin
Aron Szekely - viola
Laszlo Hajdu-Nemeth - viola
Raul Rothblatt - bass

We will also have a suprise guest musician from Transylvania. This
violinist is as authentic as it gets!!! Straight from the
Transylvanian village of Mezőszopor.

The party starts at 7.30, with dance instruction for the first hour
(till about 8.30 or 9), and then it will turn into a "let go of my
hair" style party with live music and low-key dance instruction,
stomping away as long as there is some wine to be had!

The dances taught will be from Central-Transylvania, from Mezoseg.
This dance dialect is the most popular one in the Hungarian Folk Dance
movement and is the Rock'and'Roll of Hungarian folk dances. Come learn
this unique gem of Hungarian culture!
Dance instruction by New York City's very own Andrea Kalan and Istvan
Kosbor from the Talpra Magyar Hungarian Folk Dance Group!

Location:
Hungarian House, 213 East 82nd St. between 2nd and 3rd Avenues in Manhattan.
